Travel Tips --Around Asia
SAIPAN
Bask in the warm sunshine of Saipan, only 3 1/2 hours from Tokyo. Choose your hotel from the deluxe Hyatt Regency Saipan, or the family-oriented Pacific Islands' Club. Experience the U. S. A. just a short flight from Tokyo on Continental Micronesia, Northwest or Japan Airlines. Imagine yourself wading far into the sea in the shallow, clear and clean waters, or lazing about your room watching one of the 31 channels of cable television, or driving over to Rudolpho's Pizza and Mexican Food for the daily special just US$6.00, or stocking up on groceries at Pay Less Supermarket, and CDs, videos, jeans and even kitchen ware at the department store.
BHUTAN
In the heart of snowy peaks of the eastem Himalayas lies the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon, known to the outside worid as Bhutan. It is a country with a rich, ancient heritage. For centuries, the Bhutanese have struggled to accommodate themselves to this beautiful but wild environment, with a proud history of fierce independence and rich traditions. A small Kingdom of not more than 47,000 square kilometers and a population of 1.3 million, Bhutan is bordered by China in the north and India in the south. The chain of snow-capped peaks forming the Great Himalayas in the far north is the source of many rivers that flow down to the lush valleys of the southern foothills.

Until recently, travel to Bhutan was restricted and visas issued only to invited guests and, on rare occasions, to small tourist parties. Executive Travel is proud to have been permitted to send tourists, both individuals and groups, to Bhutan. To maintain the unique culture and traditions, visitors to Bhutan are still restricted to about 2,500 per year. Executive Travel will be pleased to obtain a visa for you.

DARJEELING (India)
Once travel to Darjeeling was by special permit only, and the entry to SIKKIM was tightly restricted. Even today, this area, bounded on the north by Tibet and flanked by Bhutan on the east and Nepal on the west, is a well-kept secret by travelers. Darjeeling is one of the most relaxing and attractive towns in the Himalayas. The architecture is an intriguing blend of British Raj and Sikkimese. It is full of fascinating characters and activity, and everywhere are tea gardens and breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain.

Your hotel in Darjeeling is THE WINDAMERE, situated on Observatory Hill. The views of the Himalayas from here are unsurpassed. This world-famous hotel features a fireplace in each of its 27 rooms and is equally proud of what it does not feature, such as television, lobby shops or central heating.

From the foothills to Darjeeling runs the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known to railway enthusiasts and generations of school children as the "Toy Train".

SIKKIM
A few hours' drive to the north from Darjeeling, this small Indian state still maintains its traditional charm, with terraced slopes and peaceful villages. With virtually no lowland zone and very little flat land, Sikkim's host of high peaks culminates in the 28,208 foot Kanchenjunga, the third highest in the world. The flora in Sikkim features over 4,000 species of flowering plants, including at least forty rhododendrons and over 450 orchid varieties. Forests cover over one-third of the area, with a bird population of over 700 species and more than 600 species of butterflies recorded.
TIGER TOPS (Nepal)
Tiger Tops is situated 75 air miles southwest of Kathmandu in the Royal Chitwan National Park, one of Asia's richest and most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries. For centuries, Nepal was veiled in mystery, a remote exotic Kingdom shut away from the outside world. Completely forbidden to strangers were its massive mountains, green terraced foothills and tall grasslands. The lodge lies deep in the heart of the Royal Chitwan National Park. Its treehouses and bungalows are built with materials taken from the forest itself. Rooms are modern, with solar-heated showers and modern toilet amenities. Activities at the Lodge include nature walks, wildlife viewing on elephant back, Landrover drives, boat trips, jungle treks, bird watching excursions, wildlife viewing and photographing from machans (blinds), slide shows and the services of experienced naturalists. The wildlife of Chitwan includes the rare, greater one-horned rhinoceros, several species of deer, sloth, bear, wild boar, fresh-water dolphin, leopard, the marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles, over 450 species of birds and the nocturnal Royal Bengal tiger.
AUSTRALIA - THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

TASMANIA

The air is said to be the world's cleanest, the water the most pure and the seafood the very finest. November to May, spring, summer and fall here "down under", is the best time to visit. Noted mostly as the birthplace of Errol Flynn, Tasmania hosts attractions such as Port Arthur, a former penal colony; a spectacularly beautiful, mountainous drive from Hobart to Queenstown; powder-white beaches in the north; antique shopping and a delightful market every Saturday in Hobart. The market is a kaleidoscope of life in Tasmania. Items carved from the many woods of Tasmania, home-sewn and knitted clothing, colorful displays of vegetables, antiques and local art are featured.

VIETNAM
Good services, good hotels, fantastic natural beauty, yes, this is the Vietnam of today. An easy side trip from Hong Kong or Bangkok, one must include Hanoi in the north. Seventy-six miles (125 km) to the east of Hanoi lies Halong Bay with over 3,000 magnificent mountains rising out of the sea. Our morning cruise provides a remarkable sight of these magnificent mountains jutting out of the emerald sea and fishing junks plying in and out among them.

Newly-opened in DALAT, the highlands of eternal spring, a half-day drive from Ho Chi Minh City, is the Palace Hotel; not first class, nor deluxe, this is Royal Class! Five years of renovation have restored the hotel to its former elegance and charm. Warm, inviting, gracious, comfortable, with services extending beyond your desires, you'll drown in the luxury; with a friend, eternal friendship is a certainty; with the family, you'll be a hero, guaranteed. LAOS
Once known as the land of a million elephants, is a charming country with some of the most gentle and friendly people in Asia. A rather sleepy capital, Vientiane, is without traffic jams, but you are likely to see chickens and cows wandering in the city streets. Some thirty-odd Buddhist pagodas provide interesting sightseeing. Not to be missed is That Luang, a golden stupa (Buddhist shrine) sitting on a pyramid surrounded by 30 spires. A short flight north brings you to Luang Prabang, the former royal and religious capital of Laos. The city, surrounded by lush, forested hills and valleys, is a must in any visit to Laos. Twenty kilometers up the Mekong takes you to the 400-year-old cave temples of Tham Ting, housing hundreds of carved wooden Buddhist statues.

CHIANG MAI / CHIANG RAI
An hour's flight to the north of Bangkok is the city of Chiang Mai, a veritable treasure house of the arts and architecture of the region. The area abounds in cottage industries and handicrafts, such as colorful, painted, paper umbrellas and the famous celadon, rich silk fabrics, fine silver and fabulous gem stones.

Visit the Long-Necked People in Mae Hong Son, just a short 30-minute flight from Chiang Mai on the Myanmar (Burma) border. Plan your visit to one of the several villages, perhaps one downstream on the Pai River. Travel by long-tail boat to and from the village, and then after lunch back at the River View Hotel, take a short elephant safari.

A leisurely full day's drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai takes you through beautiful mountain scenery of northern Thailand, with stops en route to visit Hill Tribe villages (minority nationalities). Compare the cultural differences and shop for handicrafts. The lovely le Meridian Baan Boran is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Ruak River and mighty Mekong with views of the borders of Thailand / Myanmar (Burma) / Laos. Enjoy a ride upriver on a long-tail boat or spend an afternoon on an elephant safari. There is excellent golfing in both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

MYANMAR (Burma)
has become more accessible this past year, with improved air frequencies from Bangkok and an easing of visa application procedures. A visit must include Pagan in the north, where you will have a spectacular view of over 5,000 temples in an area of only 15 square miles. Onward then to Mandalay, where thousands of pure white temples are highlighted against the dark green hills of the city. New hotels have opened in Yangon (Rangoon), such as the elegantly-restored Strand Hotel, a member of the Amman Resort group and the Inya Lake Hotel, also newly-restored by the New World Hotel group from Hong Kong. New flights are now offered several times a week from Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand direct to Pagan and Mandalay, making access even easier.

New in Myanmar: sail in absolute luxury between Pagan and Mandalay aboard "The Road to Mandalay". This liner, with a pool, lounges and deluxe accommodation, makes the tour of this northern part of Myanmar a relaxing and enjoyable experience. This service is operated by the Orient Express Trains and Cruises Group.

The Tari Valley, hailed as the Lost Shangri-La: the discovery of this civilization in the later 1930's made headlines the world over. Contained in land-locked isolation, a pocket in the Southern Highlands, the Wigman's culture and traditions remain intact. Even today, particuarly on Saturday and Sunday, the Wigmen revert to their ancient customs. They paint their bodies decoratively, and wearing wigs made of human hair adorned with Bird of Paradise feathers, participate in rituals as old as time immemorial. Enjoy the pristine, natural beauty of the Southern Highlands, where you will encounter the unique culture and lifestyle of the Huli Wigmen. Youll enter another time-frame. Rather than live in a clustered tribal village, the Wigmen choose to live near their immaculate, highly cultivated plots of land in the lush Tari Valley.
